The AMC-16 Satellite:  Designed and built by Lockheed-Martin for SES-AMERICOM, it was inserted into orbit on 12/17/2004 from Cape Canaveral aboard an Atlas V rocket. It weighs 4312 lbs and is

designed for a 15 year life span to service Echostar's DISH NETWORK. It is in geosynchronous orbit at approximately 0 degrees latitude and 97 degrees West longitude at an altitude of roughly 35930 km (about 22325 miles).  Its sister-satellite, the AMC-15, was orbited in October, 2004 on an ILS Proton rocket from the Star City launch facilities at Baikonur, Kazakhstan.

In the footsteps of others:

The satellite views of Earth are due to the work of John Walker at www.fourmilab.ch and are presented through his courtesy. You can visit his "Earth and Moon Viewer" page to get a general idea of what you can do at his site and then go to his "Earth and Moon Viewer Custom Request " page to build your own displays.

The local radar graphics are presented through the courtesy of the weather underground.  I think this is the best weather site on the net. If you are going to bookmark one weather page as your favorite, make it www.wunderground.com  It shows just about everything you want to know about your local weather on one page, and it loads very quickly, which is important to us dial-uppers.  One thing I really like is there are a lot of weather hobbyists with personal weather stations and the Underground has teamed up with these people to display their data.  Thus, it is possible for you to get  the current conditions for your hometown, not some big city airport many miles away from you.

The weather search and the weather for the several cities are presented through the generosity of www.weatherforyou.com which is another great weather site worth book marking. It not only has the traditional search, but also maps on which you can drill down, radar and satellite images, international weather, and tons of statistics.

Most of the weather data used in the US comes from the National Weather Service at NOAA.

Maps, radar, satellite images, forecasts, and warnings are also available at the NWS.

If you're bored, you can check out the webcam at the North Pole, or maybe the one at the South Pole. Remember that these places are dark six months out of the year.

For those of us who would rather be at South Beach, here's a webcam and weather report from the Miami Weather Service.

If you want to see if the big ones are breaking on the North Shore, you can try Surfline's Waimea Bay Webcam. Unfortunately, if you want to get the most out of Surfline, you have to pay them $70 per year, but they have webcams and surf reports from all over the world.

If the North Shore Roar of O'ahu is is a little slow today, you can try the "serenity" of of the North Shore of Mau'i at the Maui Wind Cam.

And finally, for a massive list of WWW, Gopher, Telnet, FTP, and Usenet weather related sites there is the University of Michigan's Weather Sites

Weather

On this page you can view satellite images of the earth, get your local weather, and view the weather for my four favorite beach cities in the United States.

There's a lot going on here, so if the satellite photos don't load properly, simply refresh your browser.

Clicking on the "weatherforyou.com" links will open pages in the same window as the one you are using now.  All other links will open a new browser window.

Disclaimer:  This weather data stuff comes from weathermen so you know it's right only about half the time.

Satellite Views:

Current view of the Earth from the AMC-16 satellite in orbit above the equator, computer enhanced to eliminate cloud cover.  This is good for night viewing to see the city lights for population centers.

Current view of the Earth from the AMC-16 satellite showing cloud cover and computer enhanced to show temperature gradients identified by color.
